Some thermal paper, particularly older types of receipt paper, has been coated with a chemical called Bisphenol A (BPA). This chemical acts as a color developer, making the text appear when heat is applied.

While the FDA has stated that BPA is safe at low levels, some studies have raised concerns about its potential health effects, particularly related to skin absorption. In response, many manufacturers began using Bisphenol S (BPS) as a substitute. However, BPS has also been shown to have similar properties to BPA.

It's important to know that the printer itself is not toxic. The heat it generates is simply a trigger for the chemical reaction on the paper.

How to Ensure Your Thermal Printing is Safe

Choose BPA-Free and BPS-Free Paper: Most modern thermal paper manufacturers now offer paper that is certified free of both BPA and BPS. When buying paper, look for clear labels that state "BPA-Free," "BPS-Free," or "Phenol-Free." This is the best way to eliminate the concern entirely.

Limit Direct Contact: While the risk is low, it’s a good practice to handle receipts as little as possible. For businesses, this means encouraging customers to use digital receipts where possible.

Properly Dispose of Receipts: Avoid recycling thermal paper with your other paper goods, as the chemical coating can contaminate the batch.
